Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the total number of children under five, by education authority, at(a) nursery schools and (b) primary schools, for each year since 1983.

Mr. Butcher

The total numbers of pupils aged under five in maintained nursery and primary schools in each local education authority in England in January of each year since 1983 are given in the table. Many of these pupils in primary schools were in nursery classes.
