HC Deb 19 October 1988 vol 138 cc861-2W
Mr. Spearing

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received from the London borough of Newham concerning the future capital investment in education in docklands; and what timetable he expects to pursue in order to meet the needs of the area for new school places.

Mr. Butcher

I have received the London borough of Newham's education capital plans for 1989–90 and future years. In addition, officials from my Department have discussed capital needs in the dockland area with representatives of Newham.

Newham is responsible for providing sufficient school places in their area. Its capital plans are currently under consideration and capital allocations for 1989–90 are expected to be announced before the end of the year. In formulating allocations priority will continue to be given to the establishment of new or enlarged schools to meet population growth.
