§ Mr. Andrew SmithTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make it his policy to initiate the convening of an international conference to promote a settlement for the Kampuchean people, containing international guarantees against the return to power of Pol Pot and his immediate followers.
§ Mr. EggarWe fully support the efforts of Prince Sihanouk and the Association of South East Asian Nations to bring about a negotiated political settlement in Cambodia. Naturally we are ready to help when and where we can. This might include eventual participation in an international conference if, in due course, that seemed to be the best way to proceed.
§ Mr. Andrew SmithTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make it his policy to promote the exclusion of the Pol Pot faction of the Khmer Rouge from the United Nations.
§ Mr. EggarWe see no reason to change our policy on the question of Cambodia's seat at the United Nations, which implies neither recognition of the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea (we recognise only states, not Governments) nor support for the abhorrent Pol Pot.
