HC Deb 19 October 1988 vol 138 c885W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information he has as to how many babies were brought into the United Kingdom for adoption by British couples during 1987; and if he will list the countries of origin.

Mr. Renton

[holding answer 29 July 1988]: Information is not available in the form requested, as the statistics collected on passenger admissions do not separately identify children who come to the United Kingdom for adoption. The available information—which may not be entirely complete—is that 52 children were granted settlement in the United Kingdom in 1987 on the basis of their adoption by a person already settled here. The nationalities are shown in the table:

Acceptances for settlement by reason of adoption
Nationality Number of children of each nationality
India, Pakistan 7
Canada, Korea, Philippines, Sudan, Sweden, Thailand, USA 2
Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, El Salvador, German Federal Republic, Ghana, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, Zimbabwe, Other 1
152
1 Includes one child whose nationality is not recorded.
