HL Deb 15 November 1988 vol 501 c919WA
Lord Teviot

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What measures they are taking to promote direct intercontinental air services to regional airports in the United Kingdom.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

The 1985 airports policy White Paper commits the Government to encourage the use and development of regional airports so that they can meet the maximum demand they can attract. The Government therefore seek to promote the interests of UK regional airports wherever the opportunity permits in their negotiations with foreign governments. The new air services agreement between the UK and Canada, for example, allows UK and Canadian designated airlines to serve any UK or Canadian airport, and international scheduled services have already commenced from points in Canada to Leeds/Bradford, Newcastle, Birmingham and Cardiff.
