§ Mr. JannerTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment to how many employers his Department's race relations employment advisory service has given specific advice and encouragement on the adoption of the recommendations of the Commission for Racial Equality's code of practice; and how the race relations employment advisory service encourages the greater use of the positive action provisions of the Race Relations Act.
§ Mr. NichollsSpecific advice and encouragement on the adoption of the recommendations of the Commission for Racial Equality's code of practice forms an integral part of all my Department's race relations employment advisory service's contacts with employers. As I previously indicated in my reply to the hon. and learned Member on Tuesday 1 November,Official Report, column 611, in the year ended 31 March 1988, advisers made 1,082 visits to employers. In the period from 1 April—30 September 1988 a total of 529 visits have been made. The service encourages the greater use of the positive action provisions of the Race Relations Act by discussing and promoting the provisions during all visits to employers, and by including a reference to positive action in all training seminars and encouraging employers to develop a positive action strategy as an integral part of their overall equal opportunities policy.
§ Mr. JannerTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment for how long the race relations employment advisory service's research project to investigate benefits which accrue from the introduction of ethnic monitoring systems will continue from 1 January 1989; and who will conduct this research project.
§ Mr. NichollsThe project will be undertaken by the ethnic minority employment research group of the department of sociology at the University of Leicester and will take 12 months.
