HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 cc481-2W
Sir Philip Goodhart

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what instructions he has given for the modification of cars used by his Department and the National Health Service so that they can use unleaded petrol.

Mrs. Currie

There are approximately 60 official vehicles operated by the Department of Health. Instructions have been issued to have work done to convert the vehicles to run on unleaded fuel where it is technically possible to do so.

Vehicles which cannot run on unleaded fuel will gradually be replaced, as they reach the end of their economic life, by vehicles which can.

We are offering similar guidance to health authorities which are responsible for some 14,000 Crown cars and approximately 7,000 ambulances, many of which already run on lead free diesel, petrol or LPG fuel.
