HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 cc485-6W
Mr. Dicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimates he has of the ethnic minority population in the year 2000 as a proportion of(a) the United Kingdom as a whole, (b) Birmingham, (c) Bradford, (d) Bristol, (e) Manchester, (f) Wolverhampton, (g) Halifax and (h) each of the London boroughs; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

[holding answer 10 November 1988]The latest figures, published in "Population Trends 46", suggested that the total size of the ethnic minority population of Great Britain in the year 1991 would be about 3 million, or 5.4 per cent. of the total population of Great Britain. This is broadly in line with earlier projections, published in "Population Trends 16", which indicated that by the end of the century this population might be about 7 per cent. of the total. No projections of the ethnic minority population for local areas are available.

Mr. Dicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many United Kingdom resident women born to parents from the new Commonwealth and Pakistan are now of child-bearing age; and what estimates he has of that figure by the year 2000.

Mrs. Currie

[holding answer 10 November 1988]I regret that the precise information requested is not available. It is estimated that for all ethnic minority groups combined during the period 1984 to 1986, there were about 618,000 women of childbearing age resident in Great Britain. Details are given in an article by Christopher Shaw included in "Population Trends 52".

Mr. Dicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, in the latest year for which figures are available, what percentage of births were to mothers from the new Commonwealth and Pakistan in each of the following areas:(a) Birmingham, (b) Bradford, (c) Bristol, (d) Manchester, (e) Wolverhampton, (f) Halifax and (g) each of the London boroughs.
