§ Mr. Peter BottomleyIn 1987 there were in all, about 8.4 million disclosures of names and addresses of vehicle keepers from the records at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre. A detailed breakdown of the names of the recipients is not available. Over 6.7 million of the disclosures were to the police, central ticket offices, local authorities, other Government Departments, and other enforcement agencies, for use in connection with the investigation of offences. In some 1.6 million of these cases, information was supplied to vehicle manufacturers for the purpose of safety-related recalls. The remaining 150,000 disclosures were to individuals or companies who demonstrated reasonable cause, as specified in regulations, for needing the information.
