To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many private security firms guard his Department's premises; how many guards are involved; and what is the total value of the contracts.

The number of security firms currently employed to guard Ministry of Defence premises is 13. The exact number of guards employed under these contracts is variable, but approximately totals 200. The total value of these contracts for the twelve months to 30 September 1988 is of the order of £1.62 million.
