HC Deb 11 November 1988 vol 140 c335W
Mrs. Ann Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what number and proportion of prisoners were(a) employed and (b) engaged in full-time education on the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The most recent figures available are for 1987 and are based on the average number of prisoners employed per weekday in male establishments. They are:

  1. (a) 25,330, which is just over half of the male population and
  2. (b) 6,490, which is approximately one seventh of the male population, and include those on training courses.

These figures should be regarded as approximate. There are no available figures for female establishments.
