HC Deb 10 November 1988 vol 140 c309W
24. Mr. Alexander

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what remission convicted criminals, including those convicted of terrorism and murder, automatically receive in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ian Stewart

A prisoner sentenced to a fixed term of imprisonment is eligible for 50 per cent. remission. The mandatory sentence for murder is life imprisonment, or detention during pleasure if the offender was under 18 at the time of the crime, and such sentences by their nature do not attract remission.
