HC Deb 09 November 1988 vol 140 c216W
Mr. Fearn

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many tourist attractions in the United Kingdom are based on railway history; and how many have received grant aid.

Mr. Lee

The Museums Association currently list 31 railway-based attractions in the United Kingdom open to the public which have historical connections. There are also a large number of smaller attractions such as individual restored locomotives. Of the 31 major attractions, one in England received grant aid under section 4 of the Development of Tourism Act in 1988–89. In Northern Ireland, under the local authority grants scheme, one attraction received assistance in 1987–88, and one in 1988–89.

Mr. Fearn

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what grants are available to private companies promoting tourism which intend to expand their operations in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Lee

Grants are available in England through the English Tourist Board under section 4 of the Development of Toursim Act 1969. Tourism projects may also be eligible for other forms of assistance, for example, from the MAFF farm diversification scheme or the DTI's city grant scheme.
