Mr. Hayward

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment by how much unemployment has fallen as a percentage(a) since the start of 1988, (b) in the last 12 months and (c) in the last two years in Greater London, Cornwall, Nottinghamshire, west Yorkshire and south Glamorgan.

The following information is in the Library. The table shows the percentage change in unemployment since the start of 1988, over the last 12 months and over the last two years for the areas requested.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the fall in unemployment expressed as a percentage decrease in(a) Greater London and (b) the other parts of the south-east included in the regional classification as displayed by his Department's monthly statistics.

The table shows the percentage change in unemployment over the 12 months to September 1988 for Greater London and the rest of the south-east.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the unemployment rate for that area of the south-east not included in Greater London in his Department's monthly figures.

Mr. Lee

In September 1988 the unemployment rate, expressed as a percentage of the work force, in the south-east region excluding Greater London was 4.1 per cent. The September 1988 figures include some over-recording.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what was the change in unemployment from the start of 1988 to the latest date available for each of the English regions as a percentage.
