Mr. Mallon

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what plans the Northern Ireland Housing Executive has to bring sub-standard houses in Northern Ireland up to an acceptable standard.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 31 October 1988]: This is a matter for the chairman of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive who has advised me that the Housing Executive proposes to carry out capital improvements principally in relation to space standards, kitchens and heating in 76,500 dwellings in its own stock over a 10-year period. The improvement and repair of qualifying dwellings in the private sector will continue to be assisted by grants under the Housing Executive's renovation grants scheme.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many sub-standard houses owned by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive are situated in the constituency of Newry and Armagh.

[holding answer 31 October 1988]: This is a matter for the chairman of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive who has advised me that the Housing Executive owns 3,340 houses in the constituency of Newry and Armagh which have features below its current new-build standards, principally space, kitchens or heating.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many sub-standard houses owned by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive are situated in rural areas and how many in urban areas.

[holding answer 31 October 1988]: This is a matter for the chairman of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, who has advised me that the Housing Executive owns 19,120 and 57,380 houses in rural and urban areas respectively which have features below its current new-build standards principally space, kitchens or heating.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many sub-standard houses are owned by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive in the whole of Northern Ireland.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many houses owned by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive which were sub-standard have been brought up to standard in the period between 1 January 1980 and 1 January 1988.

[holding answer 31 October 1988]: This is a matter for the chairman of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive who has advised me that improvements were carried out to 58,222 dwellings over the period.
