Mr. Mallon

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what decisions have been made to date by the Department of the Environment in response to the Snaith report.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 31 October 1988]: The Department of the Environment has made the following decisions in response to the Snaith report.

  1. (1) To introduce a series of improved engineering procedures for the assessment and treatment of the structural condition of roads.
  2. (2) To investigate the implications of adopting a positive abandonment policy in respect of lowly trafficked rural routes.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when he intends to publish the Snaith report.
