To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment when he last met Nirex to discuss the disposal of intermediate level waste; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ridley

I met the chairman of Nirex on 4 July. We are waiting for Nirex to submit proposals to the Government in the light of responses to the company's consultation exercise and technical studies.

54. Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the progress being made by Nirex in identifying a site for the disposal of low and intermediate level waste.

I understand that Nirex is evaluating the results of its technical studies and replies to the company's discussion document. When these are completed Nirex intends to submit proposals to the Government, which we expect to be early next year.
