HC Deb 27 May 1988 vol 134 c404W
Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what measures are being taken by his Department to ensure that Wales retains its present share of the sheepmeat sector in Europe on the implementation of the review of the common agriculture policy sheepmeat regime.

Mr. Peter Walker

During the review of the sheepmeat regime we will continue to resist changes which would discriminate against United Kingdom and Welsh interests and will seek to secure arrangements which would allow free but fair competition.

Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what measures he has taken to inform the European Commission of the views of the Welsh farming community concerning the imposition of a separate budgetary stabiliser for sheepmeat produced in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Peter Walker

Our opposition to a separate sheepmeat stabiliser for Great Britain was made clear to the Commission during the negotiations which produced the agreement at the European Council on 11–12 February 1988. In accepting the final terms of the agreement as a whole, a judgment had to be made on the overall benefits which could be achieved.
