HC Deb 27 May 1988 vol 134 c370W
Mr. Janner

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster when he expects the British Standards Institute to develop a new safety standard for pen tops; at what stage is its investigation; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Butcher

The British Standards Institution has set up a committee to develop a new standard. It held its first meeting in April and a further one will take place in June at which it is hoped to finalise a draft. This will then be circulated for public comment before an expected publication date in December. The standard will be considered for approval for the purpose of the general safety requirement provisions of the Consumer Protection Act 1987.
