Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if individual inspectors in the mines and quarries inspectorate have the necessary legal knowledge and skills to enable them to institute and conduct prosecutions under the Health and Safety at Work Act etc. 1974.

Mr. Nicholls

[holding answer 26 May 1988]: Inspectors of the mines and quarries inspectorate receive the appropriate training to institute, but not conduct, prosecutions under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The prosecutions are conducted by the solicitors branch of the Health and Safety Executive.
