HC Deb 27 May 1988 vol 134 c348W
Mr. Meale

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy whether he expects the United Kingdom will be self-sufficient in its coal needs in 1992.

Mr. Michael Spicer

Both the demand for coal and the share of that demand supplied by United Kingdom sources will depend upon the United Kingdom industry's ability to compete with other fuels and with imported coal. The Government have every confidence that the British coal industry will take the necessary measures to enable it to become fully competitive.
