Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will detail how many attacks on Royal Ulster Constabulary personnel took place in 1987, showing whether the attack was on(a) a foot patrol and (b) a mobile patrol and the total attacked while on duty each month together with details of the type of attack, namely (i) physical assault, (ii) stone throwing, (iii) petrol bomb, (iv) explosion and (v) shooting, and the number of persons made amenable.

Mr. Stanley

Information is not readily available in the form requested and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. However, in 1987 there were over 950 incidents in which the police were attacked either on or off duty. Of these, 105 incidents involved the use of explosives and 92 the use of firearms.
