HC Deb 26 May 1988 vol 134 c233W
Mr. Chapman

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement about the disposal of the radioactive wastes prepared for sea disposal in 1983.

Mr. Parkinson

The Government have decided not to resume sea dumping of drummed radioactive wastes. Instead, these will be prepared for eventual disposal in the deep facility for low and intermediate-level wastes which Nirex has been asked to develop.

The Government nevertheless remain in no doubt that sea disposal makes good sense for some categories of waste, and intend to keep open this option for large items arising from decommissioning operations.
