To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is yet in a position to give a substantive reply to the question about new towns tabled by the hon. Member for East Kilbride for priority written answer on 28 April.

Mr. Ingram

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish in theOfficial Report a table showing for each of the Scottish new towns for the period 1974–75 to 1989–90, inclusive, the actual or estimated (a) capital expenditure, gross and net of capital receipts, (b) revenue expenditure and (c) capital debt, expressed in cash and as per capita amounts.

The information requested concerning the development corporations' capital and current expenditure, capital receipts and loan debt is available in the annual accounts published in each corporation's annual reports for the period 1974–75 to 1986–87. The corporation's annual reports for the year 1987–88 are to be laid before Parliament on 13 July.

Information on the estimated capital and revenue expenditure of the new towns in aggregate for the years 1987–88 to 1990–91 is contained within the Government's expenditure plans 1988–89 to 1990–91 presented to Parliament in January of this year.

Information on population within the designated area of each Scottish new town for the years 1974–75 to 1989–90 was included in the answer given to the hon. Member on 25 May.
