HC Deb 26 May 1988 vol 134 cc303-4W
Mr. Bell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will take steps to ensure that new entrants to the local government superannuation scheme should be treated as members unless they elect to the contrary; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what resources are available in the local government superannuation scheme to make improvements, including pensions for widowers, children of married women, dependants of single persons, spouses of post-retirement marriages, and a guaranteed pension for five years as well as a minimum death-in-service lump sum of two years' pay; and what the total cost would be of these improvements on top of current liabilities;

(3) what plans he has to terminate the difference in the local government superannuation scheme whereby women contributors pay into the scheme at the same rate as men for unequal benefit;

(4) why women receive less than their male counterparts when paying into the local government superannuation scheme; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chope

I will write to the hon. Member.
