To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what action he has taken to remedy past inequalities in employment practices in his Department, in compliance with the Commission for Racial Equality and the Equal Opportunities Commission, respectively.

The Department has taken measures to reduce under-representation of women in the higher grades and of black and Asian staff. These measures include: women-only development training; advertising opportunities for job-share, part-time work and career breaks; using the ethnic minority press for advertising local vacancies; participating in feature articles to publicise the Department's work; taking part in schools liaison; using inner city job centres and other types of outreach work; and participating in a central training review and promotion monitoring projects.
