HC Deb 26 May 1988 vol 134 c234W
Mr. Janner

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what action he has taken to remedy past inequalities in employment practices in his Department:, in compliance with the codes of the Commission for Racial Equality and the Equal Opportunities Commission, respectively.

Mrs. Rumbold

The Department has reviewed the range of employment practices over the last few years in the light of Civil Service policy on equal opportunities. This has led to such developments as the introduction of "keeping in touch" arrangements for those who resign for domestic reasons, and the provision of women-only development training courses. Guidance on equal opportunity policies is included in the training provided for those involved in staff appraisal, recruitment and promotion interviewing. Ethnic monitoring is being used in sample recruitment surveys to measure the number of white and ethnic minority applicants and to identify significant variations in their success rates throughout the competition.
