HC Deb 26 May 1988 vol 134 cc284-5W
Mr. Devlin

To ask the Attorney-General what proposals he has to recruit more staff to the Crown Prosecution Service; and how many are currently employed.

The Attorney-General

Recruitment of non-legally qualified staff in the Crown Prosecution Service has not posed difficulties which require special attention. As far as lawyers are concerned, I refer my hon. Friend to the answer that I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Erith and Crayford (Mr. Evennett) on 26 April 1988 at column95.

The staffing figures on 18 May 1988 were as follows:

Complement Staff in post
Lawyers 1,788 1,314.5
Non-lawyers 2,992.5 2,595.1
All staff 4,780.5 3,909.6

Mr. Devlin

To ask the Attorney-General what are the current pay scales for members of the Crown Prosecution Service.

The Attorney-General

For the current pay scales of all members of the Crown Prosecution Service at grade 5 and below, I refer my hon. Friend to the answer that I gave to the right hon. and learned Member for Aberavon (Mr. Morris) on 26 February 1988 at columns 353–54.

The current pay scales for staff at grades 1 to 4 are as follows:

Grade Range
£
1 65,000
2 43,500–54,0001
3 34,000–43,0001
4 30,344–33,4691
1 Includes additional increment payable under the performance point scheme.

Mr. Devlin

To ask the Attorney-General if he intends to raise the pay levels of members of the Crown Prosecution Service in the light of the recent internal survey by members of the staff on their pay and conditions.

The Attorney-General

I refer my hon. Friend to the answers I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Erith and Crayford (Mr. Evennett) and the hon. Member for St. Helens, South (Mr. Bermingham) on 26 April 1988 at column 94 and 21 April 1988 at columns507–509.
