On 18 April officials of the Department met representatives of NALGO to discuss the proposed establishment of the National Rivers Authority and the privatisation of the water authorities' utility functions. The water authorities will themselves consult the trades unions on the schemes of reorganisation which they have been asked to prepare.

§ Mr. MoynihanTwo. I met the chairman of the Countryside Commission, Sir Derek Barber, on 27 January when we discussed, among other things, appointments to the national park authorities. On 8224W October 1987 I attended the international symposium on protected landscapes in Grange-over-Sands which was organised by the commission.

Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment and other ministerial colleagues who are more closely involved in the council's affairs have met members of the NCC on several occasions during the last year.
