HC Deb 25 May 1988 vol 134 c198W
Mr. Hood

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what, for each year since 1975, was the percentage fluctuation in the value of the national currencies of Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, West Germany and Japan.

Mr. Lilley

The following table shows, for each of the eight countries in question, percentage changes in effective exchange rates. as computed by the International Monetary Fund, for the years 1975 to 1987.

In 1988–89 we shall, with the support of the police, pursue VED evadors more vigorously. A record number of enforcement campaigns is planned, covering almost half the vehicle population in England, Scotland and Wales.

Campaigns induce motorists to tax their vehicles voluntarily through local publicity and lead to the automatic prosecution of those who ignore the warnings given. During the year, the last of the vehicle registration offices will get computer terminals linked to the DVLC vehicles register.

The number of evadors brought to book through prosecutions or out of court settlements has increased every year since 1981–82 and a further increase is planned in 1988–89.
