Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland which employers have made a compensatory payment to a complainant under the Fair Employment (Northern Ireland) Act 1976; what have been the sums involved in each case, the original date of each settlement, the eventual date of payment from 1976 to the present.

Mr. Viggers

[holding answer 20 April 1988]: This is a matter for the chairman of the Fair Employment Agency. I understand that there have been 39 cases, the details of which are in the table. It would not be in the best interests of the work of the agency to release the names of parties involved in cases under section 24 of the Act.

Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many complaints under section 24 of the Fair Employment Act (NI) 1976 of unlawful discrimination, the Fair Employment Agency has declined to pursue; and what reasons have been given in each case.

Mr. Viggers

[holding answer 20 April 1988]: I understand from the chairman of the Fair Employment Agency that the agency has declined to pursue 100 complaints under section 24 of the Fair Employment (NI) Act 1976 for the reasons specified:

Number
(1) Adjudged frivolous 34
(2) Outside the time limits 48
(3) Outside the scope of the legislation 12
(4) Considered by another statutory body 1
(5) Failure by complainant to provide sufficient information 5

Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make available the results of the Fair Employment Agency for Northern Ireland's monitoring of recruitment to theBelfast Telegraph since 1983.

Mr. Viggers

[holding answer 20 April 1988]: It would not be in the best interests of the work of the Fair Employment Agency to publish full details of the information obtained from its monitoring or recruitment by specific employers, but a summary of such information in respect of the Belfast Telegraph if contained in the 11th annual report of the agency, a copy of which is available in the Library.
