HC Deb 20 May 1988 vol 133 c591W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his policy with regard to dealing with individuals and bodies in Wales who wish to correspond with his Department through the medium of the Welsh language.

Mr. Portillo

Local offices of the Department in Wales will reply in Welsh to any letters received in that language.

There are facilities for local social security offices outside Wales to have any document or correspondence received in Welsh translated into English, but the reply will normally be in English.

Some social security benefits are administered centrally from offices outside Wales. Correspondence from Wales in Welsh received by any of these central offices is normally answered in Welsh.
