To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will now recruit more staff at Lunar house to cope with the present immigration work load; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Renton

Vigorous steps are being taken to recruit some 100 additional staff for the immigration and nationality department at Lunar house during the current financial year. In addition, we are planning to recruit more than 100 further staff outside London to deal with the influx of citizenship applications.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many of the total number of passengers granted temporary admission in(a) 1986 and (b) 1987 subsequently absconded.

Mr. Renton

In all, 1,161 passengers absconded in 1986 and 821 in 1987. Separate figures are not available, but the great majority would have been on temporary admission.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many people were detained overnight during 1987 in(a) Harmondsworth detention centre, (b) Queen's building, Heathrow and (c) the Beehive, Gatwick;

(2) what was the total number of passengers detained overnight under Immigration Act powers during 1987, by nationality.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many of the total number of persons treated as illegal entrants in 1987, who were granted temporary admission, subsequently absconded.

Mr. Renton

A total of 924 illegal entrants were granted temporary release, in 1987 pending completion of their cases. Of these, 50 failed to comply with the terms attached and were subsequently recorded as absconders.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people detained under Immigration Act powers applied to the Home Office to be allowed to depart voluntarily under the supervised departure provisions of paragraph 156 of the immigration rules during 1987.

Mr. Renton

I regret that the information in the form requested could be provided only at disproportionate cost. However, in 1987 63 persons used the supervised departure provision in paragraph 156 of the immigration rules.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons were recommended for deportation with no custodial sentence during 1987; and in how many such cases the courts directed release(a) subject to conditions, and (b) without conditions.

Mr. Renton

During 1987 a total of 352 persons were recommended for deportation by the courts with no custodial sentence. The courts directed release subject to restrictions in 52 cases and without restrictions in 135 cases.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were received into Prison Department establishments under Immigration Act powers during 1987, by individual prison establishment.

Information for 1987 is not yet available. The average period of detention in Prison Department establishments in England and Wales of persons initially received under the Immigration Act 1971 powers who were discharged in 1986 was about four weeks.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many immigration officers and other persons for whom his Department is responsible escorted the 19 people alleged to be of Kurdish or Turkish origin back to Turkey on 5 May.

Twenty-five officers of the Metropolitan police escorted the group. They were also accompanied by two members of the immigration service, an interpreter engaged for the occasion and a doctor engaged by the airline.
