HC Deb 18 May 1988 vol 133 cc453-5W
Mr. Tom Clarke

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will publish a table in theOfficial Report showing the value, and the percentage it constitutes by value, of textile imports into the United Kingdom for each year signatory to the multi fibre arrangement for the years 1979 to 1987.

Mr. Alan Clark

[holding answer 16 May 1988]: The answer is as follows:

(2) what change there has been in the numbers of children being educated at home by their parents under section 36 of the 1944 Act in England and Wales over the past five years;

(3) how his Department monitors the education of children who are taught at home by their parents.

Mr. Dunn

It is for the local education authorities to monitor the education of children who are taught otherwise than at school. The Department does not do so, and has no information on the numbers being educated at home.

The Education Acts lay a duty on the parent to ensure that a child receives suitable full-time education, either by regular attendance at school or otherwise, and require the LEA to take action if it appears that the parent's duty is not being performed. Her Majesty's inspectorate of schools' powers to inspect do not extend to education at home.
