Mr. Dicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will arrange for one of his Department's officials to visit the Punjab to view and report back to him on conditions there and on the safety of those persons with relatives and friends in the United Kingdom; what representations he has received with regard to the interests of the constituents of the hon. Member for Hayes and Harlington in this context; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

We receive full and regular reports from Her Majesty's high commissioner in New Delhi and his staff. They are regular visitors to the Punjab. The high commissioner last visited Punjab on 26 and 27 April and discussed the situation there with the Governor of Punjab and other prominent figures.

My hon. Friend has made frequent representations with regard to the interest of his constituents in this context.
