HC Deb 18 May 1988 vol 133 c495W
Dr. Moonie

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what percentage of the total population in England and Wales suffered from(a) heart disease and (b) lung disease in the latest three years for which figures are available.

Mrs. Currie

Data on the total number of people suffering from various stages of heart disease and lung disease are not available.

The nearest available statistics can be found in the most recent "Morbidity Statistics from General Practice" (Third National Study, HMSO 1986), a study of the experiences of 48 general practices, carried out between 1 July 1981 and 30 June 1982. Data relating to hospital records for England only can be found in the "Hospital Inpatient Enquiry", for which the latest data year is 1985. Copies of both these publications have been placed in the Library.
