HC Deb 17 May 1988 vol 133 c399W
Mr. Cran

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when he expects to be able to announce the results of his Department's investigation into the possibility of extending the requirements to install safety belts on seats most at risk in existing motor coaches.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

There is conflicting technical advice from the Consumers' Association, and the Bus and Coach Council. We have asked the two organsations to consider the matter jointly and to produce a paper for the Department.

Mr. Cran

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what estimates he has made of the cost of requiring passenger seat belts to be fitted to all new motor coaches.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The coach manufacturers put the cost of fitting two-point seat belts to all the seats on a 57-seat coach at approximately £1,000 to £1,500.
