HC Deb 17 May 1988 vol 133 cc399-400W
Mr. Cran

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what estimates he has made of the cost of requiring shatterproof glass to be fitted in all new motor coaches.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The majority of new coaches are fitted with laminated glass windscreens with the remainder of the glazing being of toughened glass. Toughened glass may shatter on impact. It does not break into dangerous particles.

The additional cost of laminated glass for all the glazing requirements would be in the range £500 to £600 for a single deck coach and round £1,200 for a double deck coach.
