HC Deb 16 May 1988 vol 133 cc308-9W
Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many changes of clothes prisoners are allowed per week at each of the following prisons; Birmingham, Leeds, Pentonville, Manchester, Wandsworth, Wormwood Scrubs and Holloway.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Convicted male inmates at these establishments are provided with at least one complete change of shirt, socks and underwear each week with other clothing being changed as necessary. Inmates employed in locations such as the kitchen and officers' mess or on maintenance work have more frequent changes of clothes. Unconvicted men may arrange their own supply of clean clothing, but otherwise are provided with clean kit on the same basis as covicted inmates.

The female inmates at Holloway, whether convicted or unconvicted, wear their own clothing and do their own laundry. They are normally allowed to have three sets of clothes at any one time.
