HL Deb 16 May 1988 vol 497 c174WA
Lord Graham of Edmonton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps are taken to ensure that goods imported into the United Kingdom comply with the details of weight or quantity given on the package or carton, in particular in the case of fruit and vegetables.

Lord Young of Graffham

The Weights and Measures Act 1985 requires among other things that imported goods—including fruit and vegetables—must comply with the declared quantity and this is enforced by local authority trading standards departments.

Goods which are packed according to the EC "average" system and bear the "EC mark" (a stylised letter "e") are subject under the requirements of the appropriate directive to control by the authorities in the member state in which the packages are made up.
