HL Deb 16 May 1988 vol 497 cc173-4WA
Lord Mason of Barnsley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many companies benefited from the Department of Trade and Industry's Enterprise Initiative through the assistance of an enterprise counsellor, and from consultancy advice through the market, design, quality and manufacturing systems initiatives, since the inception of these schemes in the Barnsley travel to work area; in the Rotherham to Mexborough travel to work areas; in South Yorkshire; and in the Yorkshire and Humberside Region.

Lord Young of Graffham

Consultancy schemes for marketing, quality, design and manufacturing systems were launched on 13th January 1988 under the Enterprise Initiative and were supplemented from 1st April 1988 by the business planning and financial and information systems elements. The totals for applications received, business reviews completed as a result of a visit by an enterprise counsellor and cases referred for further consultancy under all the above initiatives are as follows:

(a) (b) (c)
Applications Received Companies Referred to an Enterprise Counsellor Companies Referred for Consultancy
Barnsley 15 15 8
Rotherham 21 20 16
South Yorkshire 120 113 77
Yorkshire & Humberside 482 447 215

(Figures for the period 31.1.88–5.5.88)

These figures relate to local authority areas, as a breakdown into TTWAs is not readily available. Due to work in progress, totals in column (c) do not directly relate to those in (b). On average just over 75 per cent. of business reviews so far result in a reference for further consultancy.
