HC Deb 16 May 1988 vol 133 c308W
77. Miss Widdecombe

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many driving licences were suspended for alcohol-related and for other offences in 1987.

Mr. John Patten

The information available relates to the number of disqualifications from driving by broad offence group, and is published in table 16 of Home Office statistical bulletin issue 36/87, "Offences Relating To Motor Vehicles, England and Wales 1986", copies of which are in the Library. In 1986, about 96,000 offences of driving, and so on, after consuming alcohol or taking drugs were so dealt with. There were about 162,000 disqualifications for all motoring offences, including disqualifications imposed under the "totting-up" rule. Figures for 1987 will be published later this year.
