HC Deb 13 May 1988 vol 133 c268W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what action is being taken by him to ensure the preservation of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation world heritage sites in the United Kingdom;

(2) how many world heritage sites, as defined by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, there are in the United Kingdom; and if he will list them.

Mr. Moynihan

[holding answer 12 May 1988]: There are 11 world heritage sites in the United Kingdom as follows:

  • Durham Cathedral and Castle.
  • Fountains Abbey and St. Mary's, Studley Royal.
  • The castles and town walls of Edward I in Gwynedd.
  • Ironbridge Gorge.
  • Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites.
  • St. Kilda.
  • Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast.
  • Blenheim Palace.
  • Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey.
  • City of Bath.
  • Hadrian's Wall Military Zone.

Before accepting a site for inclusion on the world heritage list satisfactory arrangements need to be made for continuing maintenance and protection. If the hon. Member is concerned about a particular site and would care to write to me with details, I would be happy to comment more fully.
