HC Deb 13 May 1988 vol 133 c259W
Mrs. Ann Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on ongoing research projects into the effects of advancing medical science on the ability of premature infants to be born alive either(a) in the United Kingdom or (b) abroad; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

I understand that the Medical Research Council, which receives its grant-in-aid through this Department, is funding a considerable amount of work in the field of prenatal and neonatal medicine. In 1986–87, the last financial year for which figures are available, the council spent £4.6 million on this research.
