Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish a table showing the registrations of commercial road vehicles in each category of gross weight for the past 10 years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The available information is as follows:

(6) what is the up-to-date cost of the renovation and maintenance work on the Severn bridge.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The first two contracts for the provision of improved access and for strengthening the Aust viaduct were completed in 1986. Work currently under way includes the strengthening of the deck steelwork, installation of new hangers and the fitting of new columns inside the towers of the Severn bridge. Extension of towers and replacement of cable stays on the Wye bridge are also in hand, together with work to protect three river piers against possible shipping collision. A contract for resurfacing the crossing will start next year.

The programme of strengthening and resurfacing is due to be completed by the end of 1990 at an estimated cost of £56 million. Expenditure on the strengthening programme to the end of 31 March 1988 was approximately £15.5 million.
