HC Deb 12 May 1988 vol 133 c198W
Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what resources are presently devoted to monitoring of water quality in Britain.

Mr. Moynihan

The main reponsibility for monitoring the quality of our inland arid coastal waters in England and Wales lies with the regional water authorities. In all, about I,000 staff are engaged in this area of work although many also undertake other duties. Questions about the monitoring undertaken in Scotland by the river purification authorities are matters for my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.
