HC Deb 05 May 1988 vol 132 cc591-2W
Mr. Robert G. Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on the circumstances in which an undercarriage door fell off an Icelandair Boeing 727 and landed in a garden in Southbourne close, Pinner, on 2 May.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Civil Aviation Authority has said that a main undercarriage door fell from an Icelandair Boeing 727 aircraft approaching Heathrow when the door-to-fuselage hinge failed. The airworthiness of Icelandair aircraft is a matter for the authorities in Iceland, who will be responsible for taking any necessary safety action. Section 76(2) of the Civil Aviation Act 1982 provides for the recovery of damages in respect of any material loss or damage caused by an article falling from an aircraft.
