Mr. David Shaw

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the number and cost of administrative and clerical staff employed in the National Health Service by each district health authority; and what is this cost expressed relative to the population in each district.

  3. (c) Figures are rounded to the nearest whole time equivalent.

2. The staff numbers and costs (essentially expenditure on pay including employers' national insurance and superannuation contributions) shown in the table include all directly employed staff in the diversity of grades whose pay negotiations are dealt with by the Administrative and Clerical Staff Whitley Council together with general managers and non National Health Service (agency, etc.) administrative and clerical staff.

3. Each region's totals include figures for regional headquarters and unit staff in addition to the totals for the districts.
