HC Deb 04 May 1988 vol 132 cc454-5W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will indicate the level and nature of medical aid from Her Majesty's Government to the Palestinians; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chris Patten

Last year we provided £650,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and the International Committee of the Red Cross for their programmes in Lebanon, which included medical assistance. In addition, we have recently committed some £104,000 through the Order of St. John and Oxfam for medical support in the occupied territories, including nursing, training, research, surgery and support for the mentally handicapped.

The European Community has allocated £270,000 in emergency aid, including medical supplies, to Palestinians since December 1987. Some 20 per cent. of the Community's programme is met from the British aid budget.
