To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many hours of Royal Air Force initial training are currently carried out on the de Havilland Chipmunk aircraft.

Four thousand two hundred and fifty hours were flown on the de Havilland Chipmunk aircraft during elementary flying training in the year ending 31 March 1988.

There are 77 Chipmunk aircraft currently in service with the RAF.

The Chipmunk entered service with the RAF in February 1950.
